Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT)

Wondering where all that collagen went? As we age, our skin’s ability to produce collagen diminishes. And depending on our lifestyle proclivities, from too much sunning to unhealthy habits like smoking or poor diet, collagen breakdown can leave us looking much older than our years. CIT plays an important role in rebuilding collagen by infusing the skin with all-natural, physiological regulating formulations, through a unique system of “rotational acupuncture” utilizing micro-needles. It can be used as either a stand-alone treatment or in combination with lasers, depending on age and skin conditions. Your skin still has the power to regenerate collagen. It just needs a little boost from CIT!

ABOUT COLLAGEN & COLLAGEN INDUCTION THERAPY (CIT)

Collagen is the major structural component of the dermis, and the tissue most responsible for youthful-looking skin. When we’re young, fibroblast cells in the dermis make abundant amounts of new collagen fibres, which are linked together by cross-bridging and organized into tightly bundled, dense “laminar” layers. Throughout our lives, collagen becomes continuously damaged from a variety of factors such as oxidative stress internally (like cigarette smoking) and sun exposure externally. Fibres deteriorate, cross-bridges break and bundles become disorganized and loose, resulting in enlarged pores, as well as thinning, wrinkled and sagging skin. To combat all this damage, the skin has a variety of natural mechanisms which:

  • Repair damaged fibres
  • Remodel disorganized layers
  • Remove fibres beyond repair
  • Generate new collagen

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

Generally, a minimum of 3 treatments are required to achieve the optimum rejuvenation of an area. When treating scarring, at least 5-6 treatments would generally be required. The treatments are performed 5-6 weeks apart.

WHEN WILL WE SEE RESULTS?

The first week after the treatment you may get some skin peeling which helps lighten pigmentation or scarring and the skin looks more hydrated.

The results are gradual as collagen re-production takes time, most clients report a gradual improvement in their skin colour and texture from 2-3 weeks after their first treatment. That improvement is compounded as each consecutive treatment is performed. So it’s really important to apply creams at home and commit and rebook your treatments to see the best results.

WHEN IS SKIN NEEDLING TREATMENT NOT SUITABLE?

  • the treatment should not be performed within 2-3 weeks of having an injectable dermal filler or botox.
  • the treatment is never performed on raised moles, warts or lesions
  • during pregnancy (when breastfeeding the treatment is allowed)
  •  medication (some medication may reduce healing time, please advise your therapist on anything you may be taking)
  • the treatment will not be performed if the client has an active herpes or acne breakout, however, once resolved the treatment can go ahead after 2 weeks

THE SKIN NEEDLING TREATMENT EXPLAINED

The skin is cleansed (and quick Microdermabrasion is done depending on the skin condition) & numbing cream is applied for 10-15 minutes. This minimises the discomfort and most clients grade discomfort as 2-3 out of 10 at the most. Mostly round bony or thin skin areas such as lips, forehead and eyes. Panadol only may be taken prior to treatment.

The skin is thoroughly treated in such a way that each area is needled about 15 to 20 times. An even flushing is the best indication of a perfect medical-grade treatment. Your skin will appear flushed (pink to red) which may last for 12 to 24 hours on average. Most clients are able to return to work that same day with the help of some mineral makeup.

The treatment takes approximately 30-45 minutes. In total allow 60 mins for your appointment. Please arrive with no makeup on.

Recommended treatment programme (for best results)

1. Post Skin Needling LED(- Light Emitting Diode -red light )

After skin, the needling RED LED is an ideal way to continue the regeneration of collagen in the skin as well as the healing on the surface. Ideal in conjunction with each needling treatment

2. Pre-treatment:

Microdermabrasion is recommended ( 2-3 days prior to treatment)

POST-TREATMENT MANAGEMENT

For the first 48 hours:

  • Do not use glycolic acid, retinol and acidic skin care with “active” ingredients
  • Do not touch or rub the face
  • Do not use spray tan products
  • Avoid makeup
  • Sun exposure is not advised for 12-24hrs

POST-SKIN NEEDLING HOME CARE ROUTINE

Aftercare is vital to continue the results of your needling.  We recommend you continue with Skin Health growth factor serum. (You will be advised by your therapist depending on your skin condition for aftercare products)

Put on your skin SPF 30+. Mineral makeup can be applied also.

What are the side effects of a skin needling procedure?

Over 175,000 skin needling procedures have been performed worldwide without any recorded incidents. Side effects are minimal, including mild swelling, mild bruising and peeling.

Risks of post-op infections?
Channels close within minutes, and provided the procedure is done under clinical conditions, post-op infections are very unlikely. To ensure the right healing environment, for 48 hours don’t use glycolic acid, retinol, acidic skincare or “active” ingredients.

What is the downtime after a skin needling treatment?

The inflammatory reaction of the skin is extremely short and fades significantly within hours from redness to pinkish which may last for 12 to 24 hours on average. Most clients are able to return to work the same day with the help of Mineral Makeup. It is important to protect the skin with sunscreen SPF30+.
